Plymouth Street Ministry Journal--Friday, March 27, 2015
I don't have many stories to write relate today. Jens, Michelle, Brent, and Mike were all there when I arrived just before 6. We had many visitors--I think we served about 25--but few stayed long to talk. It was a bit chilly, the temperature was in the upper thirties, but the setting sun was out and felt good. We gave a bag of food and water to most of our visitors. I saw a few of our regulars: YG, TM, and GR all stopped by. TM found some work helping out at the landfill. If he can stay sober he certainly has the desire and personality to turn his life around. ND was already across the street sitting on the shelter bench when I arrived; Mike told me he had given him a ride to the shelter.
One visitor did stay a while. An older man we have known for several years talked to Mike at length. He has been kicked out of the shelter and doesn't know where to go. He had been in an argument and pulled out a jack knife, which resulted in his being banned. He also told us that he was turned down from another shelter because he failed a background check. He said he has a felony on his record for 6th offense drunk driving, although it wasn't clear if that is why he failed the background check. He is a hard person to help. He has had a very long struggle with alcohol and has a record of failures in various programs as a result. Mike is trying to find shelter for him, but, after his unsuccessful history, most assistance programs would rather spend their limited dollars on someone with a better chance of making it. That doesn't make his needs any less, and we will do what we can.
Please pray for, and care for, the poor.
George
